Earthquake protection for switchgear systems 

Designing a switchgear system which can be used in earthquake-prone zones is a tremendous challenge for many panel builders, especially as this kind of project is typically not regular business. 

A new new white paper from Rittal entitled: “Earthquake protection for switchgear systems”, now offers switchgear manufacturers guidance on system design as well as a basic overview. 

It supports panel builders by providing information on relevant standards, typical testing methods and the layout of enclosures that can be used in earthquake-prone areas.   It answers questions such as:

•    What has to be considered when building electrical switchgears for earth-quake-prone zones?
•    What damage can earthquakes do to control panels?
•    Which standards are relevant in terms of electrical infrastructure? 

The white paper uses the TS 8 baying enclosure system to illustrate also the effectiveness of the company’s earthquake accessory set against earthquakes.

Just Plug & Play with Rittal’s New 19” Fastener

The time-consuming business of assembling and positioning of components in IT racks is now a thing of the past.


Components can be quickly and easily installed on, or removed from, the 482.6 mm (19″) mounting level of racks with Rittal’s new fastener.

Following the “plug and play” principle, the 19″ fastener is simply slid onto the rail from the inside and then locked. At the same time, the integrated contacting ensures the potential equalisation needed.

“Integrating three captive nuts within the mounting profiles in just one click saves time – and nerves”, explains Clive Partridge, Product Manager IT Infrastructure at Rittal.

The fastener has robust construction, ensuring it can be repeatedly dismantled and reused.

It can be used with every enclosure in the Rittal product range straight away. It is available as a pre-assembled 1U support with three captive nuts, including centre attachment, to standard EIA 310.

How to easily install distribution enclosures

Rittal, a leading global provider of solutions for industrial enclosures, power distribution, climate control and IT infrastructure, has announced further improvements to its ISV distribution enclosure – part of the Ri4Power range.  It has upgraded the installation kit allowing the ISV modules to be integrated faster and more easily into the TS 8 and SE 8 enclosure systems, and into the AE compact enclosure.

The new improved version of the installation kit is smaller in size so it can be stored and transported more easily, and they can also be used to install other stainless steel enclosures of the same size, making it readily usable in difficult or testing environmental conditions.

The primary component within Rittal’s ISV installation kit is the distributor framework’s removable support frame. This frame means every element within the enclosure can be removed and work on the wiring can be easily and ergonomically performed outside the enclosure.

Once the wiring is completed, the support frame with all its devices is easily fitted and firmly bolted in place. Although Rittal has dispensed with the use of obstructive profile stays, there is still plenty of available space to install further devices and equipment as required.

The Rittal ISV distribution enclosure design is based on the TS 8 and SE 8 enclosure series and on the AE enclosure for wall-mounted distributors. The distributor is configured with electrical equipment, including circuit breakers, fuses and terminals with ISV modules. The ISV modules come in a range of different options, depending on the equipment to be installed or the function needed.

Installation kits fasten the support frame of the ISV modules into different enclosure systems. A custom-designed contact hazard protection frame is included as part of the package, and this provides protection between the covers of the ISV modules and the enclosure frame.
