Rittal Unveils New AX and KX Enclosure Ranges

Rittal showcased its new AX compact and KX small enclosures at the Hanover Trade Fair 2019 (Hannover Messe).

The AX and KX enclosures are both embedded with digital processes, delivering simpler, faster assembly and component installation, greater flexibility and enhanced safety. In other words, Rittal has rethought and redesigned the two enclosures inline with the principles of Industry 4.0.

Digital transformation brings new challenges for products, their operating environment and their operational availability. This launch marks a transformation of AE – a standardised product made by Rittal for more than 50 years.  More than 35 million AE enclosures have been manufactured making it the most popular compact enclosure in the world.

Digitalization and automation in the era of Industry 4.0 are creating new enclosure challenges.

“We understand the principles behind digitalized industry and we have developed a new generation of compact and small enclosures in response. In conjunction with the introduction of our Blue e+ range and the VX25 large enclosure system, this means all our core products have been entirely redesigned, and are fit for Industry 4.0,” explains Uwe Scharf, Managing Director at Rittal with responsibility for the IT and Industry Business Units and Marketing.

The digital age is increasingly making its presence felt in switchgear workshops with a growing need for automation, greater flexibility and product availability.

Digital chain “from customer to customer”

Rittal provides effective support for the entire value chain surrounding the production of panels and switchgear – from engineering to ordering to automation.

Its digital product twin delivers high-quality data for the entire design, configuration and manufacturing process. QR codes allow all parts to be precisely identified and assigned. The launch of the AX and KX, brings compact and small enclosures inline with this approach.

For example, the Rittal Configuration System (RiCS) provides customers with a fast and simple system for configuring enclosures, accessories and modifications and an automatic plausibility check helps prevent erroneous choices. The results can be transferred directly to Rittal’s online shop, and this then gives the customer immediate access to both price and delivery date. The data can also be uploaded to EPLAN software engineering software and used for downstream tasks, complete with any modifications. This substantially cuts the time and effort needed for the engineering process.

Once the customer order is received by the Rittal Global Distribution Centre (GDC), it is shipped directly to the customer. The GDC is seamlessly integrated with the nearby, highly automated manufacturing plant, ensuring the timely and reliable shipping of the required items. As a result, all standard products can, where required, be sent to customers based in Germany within 24 hours.

Simple, fast, flexible and safe

The two latest additions to the Rittal enclosure portfolio contain improved features, along with new opportunities for value creation.

The time-savings start at the point of delivery to the customer:  panels can be removed individually because there is no need for the usual disassembly work.  Doors and cam locks are easier to install, typically without the need for tools. The wall mounting bracket can be quickly screwed into place from the outside of the enclosure, without impacting the enclosure’s protection rating. This substantially reduces the risk of damage during transit as the brackets, which protrude beyond the sides of the enclosure, can be attached on-site at the final destination.

The AX and KX are more spacious than their predecessors, the AE, CM, KL, EB and BG enclosures.

The rising number of sensors and actuators being deployed in the switchgear industry is, in turn, raising the quantity of cables to be housed. The new enclosure’s modular design – along with improved cut-outs and larger gland plates – creates (on average) a third more space for cables. In addition, integrated locators in the side panels enables the simple, precise and time-saving incorporation of interior installation rails.

As the rails have a 25mm spacing (pitch pattern) the AX and KX can use accessories from the VX25 portfolio, such as lights or terminal blocks. This keeps the inventory of the smaller parts to a minimum, and there is no need for machining, such drilling, etc.

Safety is a high priority for all Rittal enclosures. Installing components into the AX and KX leaves their protection category unaltered and the same is also true of their UL certification, which is essential for deployment on the North American market. Overall, the new design features make the compact enclosures more robust, and ensure greater resistance in particular to dynamic loads.

Suitable for many requirements

The new product lines provide answers to many varied needs.

KX small enclosures (from 150 mm x 150 mm x 80 mm) are ideal if only a few components are to be housed in terminal boxes and bus enclosures.

AX compact enclosures are between 120 mm and 400 mm deep, with a maximum size of 1,000 mm x 1,400 mm.

For all models, there is a choice of spray-finished sheet steel or stainless steel. Despite the greater number of potential use cases, the total number of components and accessories, and as a result complexity, has been markedly reduced.

Less copper, more power, less cost

Rittal has unveiled the new Ri4Power; a streamlined copper busbar that has been designed around the new VX25 enclosure.

It delivers greater levels of efficiency for panel builders and switchgear manufacturers across electrical power distribution in industrial environments.

It also offers other advantages, such as higher current ratings and easier monitoring and maintenance.  

Solutions based on this system have been tested and certified to IEC 61439.

Automation (including electrical drives and switchgear) is a fastest-growing segment of the UK electrical and electronics industry.

This is being driven by both a boom in mechanical and plant engineering, and by the deployment of more and increasingly powerful drive technologies.

Switchgear for electrical power distribution and motor control centres therefore has to evolve to meet what amounts to ever-higher demands, including higher current ratings in conjunction with compact dimensions. Rittal’s new Ri4Power, based on its VX25 enclosure, meets all these challenges.

Busbar design means less copper

In contrast to its predecessor, the new copper busbars have a smaller cross-section, which cuts costs. In addition, its streamlined dimensions enable a higher current allowing a higher rated current of up to 6300 A, with short-circuit protection up to 100 kA for 1 second.  Flat copper bars are used for the various busbar configurations, with a maximum of four bars per phase.

The busbar supports have been redesigned so they suit both 600mm and 800mm deep enclosures, and they can be attached either to the left or right side.

Added to which, installation is also now much simpler; the support can be fastened to the VX25 enclosure with just three screws.

Fewer parts for less complexity

The new Ri4Power system is designed around the VX25, and makes the most of the enclosure’s many new improvements including its structural symmetry, its highly standardised pitch pattern, fewer parts, and ease of component installation. Components can be mounted either horizontally or vertically on the VX25 frame. There is also a special compartment side panel for the Ri4Power that can be positioned to the left or right of the enclosure. This can be adapted for use in a variety of ways, for example to create a cable chamber or as space for additional components. The panel has knockouts every 50 mm with rounded edges to prevent damage to cables. In the upper part of the enclosure, there is a separate section for installing further components, which can be accessed via a flap or panel.

New configuration software

Rittal has rolled out a new version of its Power Engineering (RPE) software to coincide with the launch of the VX25 Ri4Power system, to make planning and configuring switchgear fast and simple.

It is highly intuitive and easy to use, requiring the input of just a few parameters, so even switchgear manufacturers with no previous experience can simply and reliably configure IEC 61439 tested switchgear.  Furthermore, there are interfaces for EPLAN Electric P8, for the export of bills of materials to MS Excel, and for import and export for data maintenance.

Simple monitoring and maintenance

The new busbar supports and connectors are accessible from the front, making it easier for system builders to check the torque applied to screws, or to determine the temperature of contact points by means of an infrared camera.

It’s also possible to employ sophisticated monitoring mechanisms: an IoT interface can be installed that operates with sensors for monitoring temperature, moisture or performance.  Combined with a backend production control system, this allows the operator to monitor their equipment at all times, and enjoy higher power-supply availability.

Empowered edge computing for intelligent industrial IT infrastructure

Edge and cloud computing are converging to create intelligent infrastructure.

Rittal-CSM Celebrates Double Win at Plymouth Business Awards 2019

Plymouth Business Awards 2019It was a double celebration for Rittal-CSM at the Plymouth Business awards 2019.

The company was the “stand-out winner” on the night with two awards for ‘Large Business of the Year’ and the ‘Apprenticeship Development’ award.

All the awards on the night were hotly contested with the experienced judging panel initially faced with a huge mailbag of hundreds of entries, which were eventually whittled down to very high quality shortlists across 17 categories.

The news of Rittal-CSM’s success is yet another major milestone in an outstanding year for the company.   In November 2018, it was named ‘Manufacturer of the Year 2018’ at the Western Morning News’s Business of the Year event.

“I’m delighted,” says Dr Stephen Hobbs, Rittal-CSM’s managing director.

In Times Of Uncertainty, Make the Most of your Assets


It’s safe to say that there is a great deal of uncertainty at the moment; something which is being felt not just in the UK but in many countries across the world.

In these circumstances, the best thing that businesses can do is protect their existing assets. It’s fundamentally important to ensure that all assets perform at an optimum level during their entire service life, and for an organisation to continue its journey towards increased efficiency and reliability so that it can remain competitive in a changing marketplace.

In the industrial space, a company’s lifeblood is its machinery and all machinery has critical components such as its electrical drives, motors etc. without which any very expensive robotic arm is nothing but a very elaborate statue, collecting dust.  So it’s imperative that electrical equipment is housed within a protective environment, to ensure it operates to its full potential.

A protective environment takes the form of both high quality enclosures and correctly prescribed climate control equipment. The two items work together to safeguard your equipment from the following:

High Temperatures Impact the Lifespan of Equipment

Prolonged high internal temperatures reduce the lifespan of your equipment.  This will mean an increased chance of unplanned breakdowns, increased costs and reduced production output.

Furthermore, your equipment cannot work at 100% output once its maximum operating temperature has been exceeded, which means you will experience an overall reduction in your machine’s efficiency and reduced manufacturing output.

To prevent high temperatures being reached within the enclosure, correctly sized enclosure cooling products should be installed.  This could be fans and filters, cooling units or air-to-water heat exchangers, dependant on both the amount of heat produced by the electrical equipment and the ambient temperature in the surrounding environment.

Low Temperatures Can Also Damage Equipment

Equipment needs protecting from low temperatures as much as high ones.  In winter, when ambient temperatures drop, any equipment that has been idle over the weekend can be damaged as soon as it’s turned on from cold.

In addition, motors or compressors can experience problems when oil contained within sealed systems begins to increase in viscosity.  This can damage the seals/components, again causing failures.

To prevent this happening, you should fit a correctly sized enclosure heater inside the enclosure.  When connected to a thermostat, the heater will maintain an acceptable minimum temperature preventing any damage to electrical equipment caused when the low temperature minimum is exceeded.

Condensate Poses Safety Risk

Condensate can be a real issue when it forms within the enclosure and on critical equipment in high humidity environments.  Condensate poses a real safety risk to the electrical devices and can cause catastrophic failure if left unchecked.

You can combat this problem by using a high quality industrial enclosure with a minimum of an IP54 seal to prevent humid air from constantly entering the enclosure.  This can be combined with a cooling unit featuring an integrated condensate evaporator; the cooling unit acts as a de-humidifier and removes excess condensate from the pocket of air within the sealed enclosure.

Dust, Dirt and Corrosive Substances

Many industries suffer from dusty or dirty environments, which can impact on electrical equipment and its optimum performance.  For example:

  • Carbon dust in the steel or manufacturing industry
  • Yeast or vinegar extract in the food and beverage industry
  • Salt water vapour in the air in a marine or coastal application

The above contaminants will attack the wires and electrical connections within your enclosure.  In time, this can corrode or (worse) short connections, which in turn can cause excess heat and/or a panel fire.

In highly contaminated environments, the best advice is to use a cooling product which does not allow dirty ambient air to constantly enter the enclosure, so fans and filters are a no-no.  Air-to-air or air-to-water heat exchangers and cooling units are best solutions, dependant on the heat load as they will only treat the small pocket of air within the enclosure, but they will also reduce the level of contaminants entering the space.


Any change or upheaval that impacts on a company’s trading environment brings with it challenges, but also opportunities.  The trick is always to optimise your business for success, reducing costs wherever possible, while maximising productivity and efficiency.
