Rittal Launches New Blue e Chillers in 11 to 25 kW output class

Rittal has significantly improved its range of cooling technology for machines and enclosures with its new Blue e chillers in 11 to 25 kW output class.

Using 40 per cent less refrigerant, the devices will make an important contribution to sustainable environmental protection. Meanwhile users benefit from the chillers’ precise temperature control, simplified operation and installation, as well as new safety functions.


Pre-configured option packages, which are quickly available from stock, can meet almost any need, from precision control systems with higher pressure requirements to robust outdoor applications in cold climates.
The re-cooling of liquids by chillers is one of the basic requirements for smooth operation in many industrial processes. For example, enclosures and machine tools must have strict temperature control for the precise machining of metal.


Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly


The latest generation of chillers need to be easy to operate and install, as well as offer maximum user safety. Customers also need fast order turnaround such that customised solutions must be available off-the-shelf, and there is a increased focus on sustainability and environmental performance.


With the development of its new Blue e chiller range and combined with the existing Blue e+ chillers (1.5 to 6kW), Rittal can offer a mature solution package that meets all these needs.


The adoption of a 100 per cent aluminium heat exchanger with micro-channel technology results in stand-out benefits for the user: it improves exchanger efficiency and it reduces the amount of refrigerant needed by 40 per cent compared to other chillers. In addition, the use of aluminium means that the possibility of galvanic corrosion is completely eradicated.

Regulated Performance


The fan and compressor are regulated via a digital controller which means the temperature of the cooling medium can be precisely regulated. As standard, the hysteresis is ± 2 K; however, a precision control (hot gas bypass) of ± 0.25 K is also possible as an option. This prevents temperature fluctuations that cause inaccuracies on the machined workpiece, and also ensures consistent quality.

Ease of Use


The multi-lingual and industrial-grade touch display, plus the intelligent communication interfaces, make both operation and analysis easy.
The parameterisation of the devices, as well as the read-out of the data and messages are performed quickly and shown in plain text. Error messages are prioritised and displayed in three escalation levels.

Rapid Commissioning


Blue e chillers are wired ready for connection and can be up and running quickly, via plug-and-play. Lifting eyebolts make transport easy, as does the base/plinth, which is suitable for transport by forklift truck. Uniform water connections, an adjustable overflow valve (bypass valve) and ideal accessibility to all the components make it easier for fitters and service staff to work on the units.

Designed with Safety in Mind


Integrated overflow valves ensure a constant circulation of cooling water when the consumer is closed, and the pump is running. This protects the coolant pump from overload.
The valve is pre-set for the pump being used 50Hz operation but it can be set for 60Hz. A filling level monitoring system ensures maximum reliability and improved availability. Besides this, optional flow monitors emit an alarm if the flow rate is too low and can detect hydraulic errors such as blockages in the system at an early stage.

Option Packages


Rittal also offers pre-configured option packages that are available quickly from stock and which offer a suitable solution for almost any demand.
For example, performance-enhanced pumps (4 and 6 bar) are available for increased performance. If necessary, a precision control system (hot gas bypass) can be used to improve control accuracy. In addition, the Blue e chillers can be prepared for cold zones of down to minus 20°C, as well as for laser applications, and they can also be fitted with a water-cooled condenser or with pre-heating and customised with special paint.

Rittal Therm 6.3 – updated thermal

To simplify the often time-consuming and complicated calculation of enclosure cooling and heating require-ments use Rittal’s Therm 6.3 software.

Input the dimensions and position of your panel, together with the heat loss of the equipment installed, the ambient temperature, your preferred internal temperature and details of the available power supply, you can then select a cooling or heating solution specific to your project requirements.

A user-friendly interface guides you step-by-step through the selection process and at the end of the calculation, you receive a detailed report that not only shows the selected product, but also the net heat transfer through the walls of the enclosure. In the case of cooling solutions, the internal temperature that would be reached without climate control.

All evaluations are based on the requirements of IEC/TR3 60890 890 AMD 1 and DIN 3168 for enclosure cooling units and so this useful tool also gives considerable peace of mind that suitable components have been chosen.

Enclosures can be selected from Rittal ranges or alternatively, the dimensions of bespoke cabinets can be entered manually. The heat dissipated by installed equipment can be input directly, calculated using actual measured enclosure internal and ambient temperatures or selected from a database of standard components.

Rittal offer advice on HCFC ban

From 1st January 2015 it will be illegal to use any recycled or reclaimed ozone-depleting hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) R22 refrigerant gas to service cooling units.

R22 remains one of the most commonly used refrigerants in the UK used, in the past, to charge cooling units and chillers that provide electrical enclosure and process cooling. Rittal advise this legislation may dramatically affect users ability to service and maintain existing cooling products, which could result in costly downtime for important manufacturing processes.

Given that most systems leak to a certain degree, in practical terms this implies that any equipment that is of strategic importance to a business should not be using HCFCs by 2015. All current users of HCFC systems should develop a plan to manage operations without HCFCs. Doing nothing is not a sustainable option.

To avoid this damaging scenario, now is the time to check any cooling equipment and if they contain the soon-to-be banned R22 refrigerant, contact Rittal for advice on suitable replacement products. Efficient cooling from Rittal

Germany manufacturer SHW Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH, from the Swabian, manufacture moving column machine tools. Machinery from the company includes a 200-ton moving column milling machine, the PowerForce 8, which is used to mill wind turbine stators with an internal diameter of 6.5 m. At the heart of the mill is a new, variable, universal milling head of orthogonal design with a drive power of 90 kW and a torque of up to 1,725 Nm.

SHW relies on the new “Blue e” generation of cooling devices from Rittal to exploit every possible efficiency potential in enclosure climate control. Consuming 45 per cent less energy than the previous generation, the four wall-mounted devices installed on the machine provide cooling of the input and feedback modules for the axle drive, mains filters, chokes, disconnectors, contactors, relays and have a cooling output amounting to 16 kW. The refrigeration factor of 2.47 (the COP, coefficient of performance) results from the ideal interaction of all the components responsible for the cooling output, as well as from the design of the condensers, evaporators, cooling fins, pipe bends and all the other refrigeration components. Using Rittal cooling technology, SHW have been able to connect the devices via a master-slave arrangement.

Another key factor in the increased efficiency is the ideally designed control electronics, which benefit from the new Eco-Mode control system. If continuous operation of the internal fan is not required, shut down is automatic, thus cutting energy costs.

Previously SHW had problems with cooling devices from another manufacturer that malfunctioned under extreme conditions, due to the influence of carbon dust. Since changing to ex-proof cooling units from Rittal, they have been running without problems.

Rittal cooling solution boosts data-centre energy efficiency

Rittal’s new Liquid Cooling Package (LCP) Hybrid, with a cooling capacity of up to 20kW per rack, comprises a large, high-performance air/water heat exchanger that cools IT components installed inside the server enclosure.

Delivering an energy-efficient IT cooling solution, the LCP Hybrid, with a thermal output of up to 10 kW, is especially suitable for data centres and up to 20 kW for IT racks used in university and auto-industry super-computers. Rittal’s LCP Hybrid does not require a dedicated fan or additional electricity for cooling as the fans integrated into the server direct warm air to the heat exchanger via baffle plates.

One of the key innovations is an integrated heat pipe that ensures the entire cooling surface is used to best effect. Air cooled by the heat exchanger is returned to the data centre, ensuring that all racks are cooled reliably. Intake air does not need to be extremely cold, so indirect free cooling can be used for the majority of the year. Chillers are only activated if high ambient temperatures prevent water from being cooled adequately.

Rittal has moved the water connection hoses directly onto to the rear door frame, requiring less material and taking up no additional space when the rear door is opened. This saves a great deal of time and effort when planning the piping system. The rear-door solution delivers outstanding energy efficiency, saves space and is easy to install.

Available in four sizes for each of two cooling output categories, 10 kW and 20 kW, the LCP Hybrid can be deployed for IT racks up to a height of 2,200 mm, is tailored to the needs of the Rittal TS IT rack system for server and network technology and builds upon the success of the LCP Passive.

Rittal make IT work for Sovereign

How to overcome the common problem of structural pillars or columns when designing a data centre space? Independent IT service and business solution specialist SDC (Part of the Sovereign Business Integration Group) encountered this challenge when developing their data centre in Hertfordshire.

Rittal offered the unique approach of incorporating the columns into the cabinets and cooling system. Fully sealing columns into cabinets and aisle containment systems can deliver improved efficiency in areas that are not conducive to efficient airflow, as well as utilising the maximum floor space available.
Completing phase two of the ground floor data hall, comprising of a further 80 Rittal TS IT Cabinets and 4 Cold Aisle pods, Rittal were able to solve the problem through a bespoke cold aisle pelmet based system. Cable management was used to good effect within the racks.

Cold aisle containment technology from Rittal maintains constant temperatures and precise humidity levels, ensuring all key functions are maintained.

New IEC 61439 standards are fast approaching

Rittal has produced a guide book, Standard-compliant Switchgear and Control Protection, which offers an insight into the new IEC 61439 standards and to assist Rittal customers and give guidance on how to comply with the standards.

Relating to building of control panels and electrical distribution systems, the new IEC 61439 standards will be in force from November 2014 and impact upon the design of the panel, selection of components and the testing methodology.

Basically, the panel will become a system, which means the designer/panel builder must consider: the enclosure, the effects of heat upon the components, cooling equipment, busbar system, mechanical properties and the generation of test documentation, which is a requirement.
